Jamie jo Horton

Executive Director

In her 8th year with the organization, Jamie is honored to serve Addison County as MALT’s Executive Director. Jamie has an Environmental Science degree from the University of Rochester and a Master’s of Natural Resource Management from the University Centre of the Westfjords in Iceland. She brings a strong science background and a love of working among the passions and can-do attitude of a small non-profit. Previously, she worked as a naturalist in the Adirondacks, coordinated citizen science and experiential education on the coasts of Washington state, and served as the Education Director at Audubon Vermont. Jamie thrives on the challenge of inspiring others to live as stewards of the environment and gets particularly excited about maple syrup and fall colors! In her free time you will find her with her husband and two daughters - on the TAM, hiking, biking, knitting Icelandic sweaters, and baking her way through old-fashioned cook books. liam hickey

Trails & Volunteer Manager

Liam is a conservation enthusiast with a strong interest in trail work and publicly accessible lands. He discovered his passion during his time with The Student Conservation Association (SCA), where he served on a roving trail crew across the Pacific Northwest and later with the NYS Excelsior Conservation Corps' Infrastructure and Sustainability Crew. Throughout his service, Liam gained practical work skills experience and received specialized trainings in carpentry, wet and dry masonry, and historic preservation practices. After his time with the SCA, Liam became the Senior Trails Technician for New York State Park’s Thousand Islands region. There, he managed the trails in the region’s 28 state parks and supervised the day-to-day work of the SCA Parks Corps trail crew, providing their main source of on-the-job training and trail skills instruction.

Liam is joining MALT as the new Trails and Volunteer Manager to use his knowledge and experience to support MALT's mission of preserving and protecting the natural beauty of Addison County. Liam's leadership skills and experience working with public volunteers make him an asset to the MALT team. In his free time, Liam enjoys hiking, and exploring new trails far and wide. Liam is eager to contribute his skills and experience to MALT's work and help ensure the well-being and long-term sustainability of the area's natural and human communities. Contact liam@maltvt.org.

erica harris

Lands & Grants Manager

Erica comes to MALT with a background in environmental policy, geography, and non-profit fundraising.  A west coast transplant, she has worked on community-based conservation projects from southern Africa to the Hudson Valley.  Since relocating to Vermont in 2019, she's enjoyed working with the Vermont Land Trust and Green Mountain Club, and recently completed the UVM Master Naturalist training to deepen her knowledge of the natural communities in the Champlain Valley.  Erica looks forward to becoming better acquainted with the lands and people connected to MALT in her role as Lands & Grants Manager.  She lives in Vergennes with her husband, big-eared pup, and sweet toddler son. Contact erica@maltvt.org.

Rachel klatzker

Education Manager

Rachel is our new(ish) Education Manager! She comes to us with a background in Parks and Recreation Management, entrepreneurialism with a yoga and food truck business, and is a homeschooling mom of two. She has spent many summers in National and State Parks taking children and adults on guided tours and providing fun and active programming. Recently, Rachel has been connecting with children and adults in the area either by teaching yoga or whipping up some food at events. She is now ready to put outdoor education on the forefront and is planning on including yoga and food in on some of that!

Rachel likes to think outside of the box when it comes to programming and teaching. She has always found it easy to meet children on their level, wherever that may be and is continuously impressed and inspired by nature in all of its beauty, simplicity, and challenges.

With an open heart and mind, she is excited to be working with the MALT community and along the TAM (her first place ever hiking in Vermont- how serendipitous!). She is looking forward to connecting, listening, and learning in order to create new and unique experiences for nature lovers young and old. Contact rachel@maltvt.org.

julia lindau

Programs Coordinator

As a recent graduate from the University of Vermont’s Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, Julia is honored to act as MALT’s Programs Coordinator! Julia fell in love with MALT during the summer of 2023 when she was their Trails and Land Stewardship Intern so she could not be more excited to continue her professional career with MALT.

Growing up surrounded by the rolling hills of Central Pennsylvania, Julia has a lifelong connection to Mother Nature. She realized she has a passion and skill for instilling this connection into those around her, leading her to study Natural Resources and Geography. While at UVM, she acted as a co-chair for RSENR’s Student Advisory Board, spent a semester studying tropical ecology in Costa Rica, and participated in environmental education internships across Vermont. Julia also plays French horn in the Vermont Wind Ensemble, and loves to ski, hike, and run! Contact julia@maltvt.org.

celi byer

Community Engagement Coordinator

VHCB AmeriCorps

Celi is very excited to serve as MALT’s Community Engagement Coordinator this year! Originally from Syracuse, New York, Celi graduated from Emory University this May where she double majored in Environmental Science and English/Creative Writing. She is passionate about environmental education, land stewardship, and exploring the intersection of art and nature. Celi has previously worked as an editorial intern at Smithsonian Books, a K-8 tutor for Atlanta public schools, and a research assistant for Re:wild Emory studying pesticides. When she’s not hiking, she can be found writing ecofiction and nature poetry, playing the cello, or reading anything and everything she can get her hands on. Celi’s looking forward to a phenomenal year in Addison County—ready to endure northeast winters once again! Email Celi here.

madelyn clem

ECOAmeriCorps Member

Madelyn Clem is a sophomore at Middlebury College and this year’s ECO AmeriCorps member! She is studying Conservational Biology and Math, with hopes to pursue further education and a career in sustainability. She is excited for the opportunity to serve alongside MALT, and other conservation organizations throughout the community, doing trail maintenance, youth educational programs, and most importantly, learning how our community can engage with our environment in a positive and sustainable manner. Being from Texas, Madelyn was drawn to the Green Mountain state through her passion for everything outdoors - hiking, camping, or skiing - as long as she is taking full advantage of her time in Vermont. When not enjoying nature, she can be found reading, playing the banjo, or doing her math homework!

john derick

TAM Volunteer

John has been volunteering with MALT for over 30 years. From 1990 - 2000 John helped secure landowner agreements and expand the trail from its Middlebury origin to New Haven, Weybridge, and Cornwall. During that time, John also helped navigate critical agreements with Middlebury College and VT Marble Co. to build the Boathouse and Belden Falls Bridges, respectively.

Over the years he has served on the MALT Board and as our manager of the trails, working with numerous volunteers, interns, high school and college groups, and partner organizations to build and maintain the TAM. He continues to volunteer doing trail work after 33 years. John, words cannot capture your history with MALT nor your contributions to our community. THANK YOU!

Watch him talk about building the Boat House Bridge on Otter Creek below:
